Lk 10, 38-42 At the Home of Martha and Mary 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
S. FAUSTI - The Samaritan can now stay in His way toward Jerusalem: there is a house that receives Him. But there are two ways of welcoming Him: Martha and Mary. The first is probably the figure of a certain Israel. She is whole applied to doing many things for the one Who for three times is called the Lord, she keeps the 613 commandments to prepare herself to the meeting with Him. But she did not realize that He has arrived now. Mary, the youngest, is the symbol of Israel that knows the visit of his Lord. Like Mary of Nazareth, she says: "Here I am" and welcomes His Word. For this she interrupts all other services and rejoices in the presence of the Bridegroom, whose joy is that the bride rejoice. She sits down at His feet and listens to the voice. Martha's house - as the home of Mary! - It's that suspended lodging-house between Jericho and Jerusalem, where the Samaritan stops with his weight and takes a rest. He has been welcomed , but it is He the One who welcomes and teaches the mystery of the welcome of the Father in the brothers. Here He reveals the mystery of the Father and of the Son to the listener: He heals him with the balm of His presence, the inebriates with the wine of His word, so that he may follow Him in His path. This Mary, sister of Martha and of Lazarus, that is the same who accomplishes the anointing at Bethany (Mt 26.6 to 13). She could be the one who bedews with tears and dries with her hair, perfums and kisses the feet of Him who has been walking to go near her. (Jn 7,36 ...). Now reconciled, she has a home to welcome Him; she, whose eyes delight in His face and whose ears accept His Word. With sovereign freedom she enjoys of His love, without to mind to the disappointment of the good Martha, as before she paid no attention to that of Simon, a Pharisee or a leper what he could be. And Jesus approves her without reserves. His presence is joy for Mary, and effort to his sister Martha. The two are not in simple opposition: they are sisters! The contrast is seen only from one that wants to draw the other to his duty. Instead, Jesus will call Martha to turn into Mary! The wait to open to its fulfillment, and in it to subside! It is not correct to oppose Martha and Mary as action and contemplation. Luke simply wants to purify the field in the contemplation. The Mary's action source is listening and groom joy. Her life will emerge from the contemplation, and will do not ever come off: she will always remain contemplative in action as well. In her we see the reversal operated by the Gospel; she can finally love and welcome, because He first loved and accepted her. The absolute silence of Mary, who does not anything and doesn't say anything, it is the perfect "disown" the self “ego” that is anxious to establish itself, with good or with evil it matters little, just to be a leader. Forgetful of herself, she realizes herself in the highest form of life, she is for the Other and from the Other, whole intent on Him whom listens, whole received in the Other who welcomes.
