  1. S. FAUSTI - Along with the parable of the Samaritan and of the merciful Father, this story can be regarded "a Gospel in the Gospel" in the sense that expresses the fundamental elements of it.
The encounter between Jesus and Zacchaeus achieves the salvation, to all impossible, but not to God, to Whom nothing is impossible (1:37).
Finally the man's desire to see the Son of man meets itself with the "duty" of these to dwell and to rest at him.
Finally, God and man find home inside each other and they may cease from their labor.
It is the 'face to face with his Savior, to whom each one is called.
Anticipated now to one, it will be extended to all, to the ends of the earth.
In Zacchaeus, that God who also provides to young ravens which cry to Him (Psalm 147: 9) He remembers every man, for how small and unclean, and makes him pure in order to he can make the holy journey.
It 's a key episode, the solution that anticipates and preludes to what will follow. In it they scrape together the various threads   of the "Gospel of Mercy".
It is a compendium of it..
Each word is allusive altogether and in it resound each of the themes dear to Evangelist of the universal salvation, from those of the manger of Bethlehem to those of the wood on Calvary.
The more resonant and more important expressions are on the order : to hand , chief tax collector, rich, to run , now, to need , live, receive, rejoice, to mumble , to rest, sinner, give to the poor, salvation, look, what is lost.
The center is the "desire to see" of Zacchaeus and Jesus' directs gaze toward him.
From this meeting of gazes, the salvation comes "today": the Savior is born in the human heart for whom He has died.
Zacchaeus, unsalvageable par excellence, finds the Son of man , who came among us to seek that which was lost, that "today" and "fast" is "staying" in his "home".
The unsalvageable has the sole prerogative request for the salvation. He sees his own misery and "looks for to see" the Lord's mercy that passes.
This is the beginning of each illumination.
The last words of Jesus. "The Son of Man came to seek that which is lost" is his program, which moves all His actions made so far and his passion that now begins.
His mission is to bring salvation to the lost ones - that is, to everyone, beginning from the last! "
In fact Christ came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief ", says Paul. We, too, identifying us as him in Zacchaeus, we perform the will of God, and bringing justice to the Wisdom of the One who wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge in Jesus of His truth of Mercy.

  2. Luke 18Luke19NLTLuke 20

    Jesus and Zacchaeus
1Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.
5When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
6Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
8Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
9Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
